Profile

I am a portfolio GP based between South Buckinghamshire and East Berkshire with a background in academia, policy, medical leadership, and education & training. I also have a strong background in community organising and advocacy.

Education

I read Medicine at Imperial College London with an intercalated BSc in Cardiovascular Sciences. Following Foundation Training in the West Midlands, I completed an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in General Practice at the University of Oxford, where I also obtained an MSc in Evidence Based Health Care.

Clinical Experience

Currently I am working as a sessional GP. I have experience of routine in-hours general practice, out of hours (OOH), remote telemedicine, prison medicine, medico-legal practice, extended hours hubs, and urgent treatment centres (UTCs), and clinical triage for NHS111. I also provide sessional support to a local NHS Trust as a Medical Examiner, as well as to HM Courts and Tribunal Service as a Medically Qualified Member.

My secondary care experience during my training has covered a variety of clinical areas, including Trauma and Orthopaedics, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Urology, Palliative Medicine, Oncology, Elderly Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Acute Medicine. My General Practice training was in Windsor scheme of the Oxford Deanery.

I have obtained the Diploma of Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists (DRCOG); the RCGP Substance Misuse (Part One); Medico-legal Report Writing from Bond Solon; and Minor Surgery Level 3. I am competent with EMIS, Adastra, SystmOne and Docman software packages.

Leadership and Management

I am currently a clinical lead at Thames Valley Cancer Alliance and a GP in Community Paediatrics for a local trust, where my role is to provide clinical leadership on service innovation.

Previously I was an Associate Medical Director for a large OOH and urgent care provider, and a GP auditor for NHS111. I am an alumnus of the National Medical Director's Clinical Fellowship scheme, where I co-authored the new return to practice scheme for GPs at Health Education England. I have also spent time as a Specialist Adviser for Care Quality Commission for their acute hospital inspections.

I have also completed several leadership training programmes and have obtained PRINCE2 Practitioner certification. I remain a member of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (MFMLM) and the British Medical Association.

Teaching

I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCME) from the University of Dundee and am a member of the Academy of Medical Educators (MAcadMedEd). I work for NHS England as a GP Training Programme Director for the Oxford Deanery, and I am also the regional RCGP Education Lead as well as being one of their Essential Knowledge Update (EKU) authors. I currently have an honorary academic position at Imperial College London, and have published over 25 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. My Google Scholar is available here.

I examine final year medical students for St Georges University of London Medical School in addition to examining international medical graduates in the PLAB exam for the General Medical Council. I have previously taught pharmacists for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. I am an approved out of hours clinical supervisor for the Oxford Deanery.

Interests

Outside of medicine I am involved in local community organising for several years and have been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). I am the President of the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA), Co-Secretary of the Federation of Ethnic Minority Health Organisations (FEMHO), and Co-Chair of the London Muslim Health Network. Through these roles I engage at a high level with leaders in the NHS, local government, and public health on various matters relating to population health and workforce. I also occasionally mentor prospective medical school applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds for the Social Mobility Foundation.
