I am a GP based between South Buckinghamshire and East Berkshire with a background in academia, policy, medical leadership, and education & training. I also have a strong background in community organising and advocacy.
I read Medicine at Imperial College London with an intercalated BSc in Cardiovascular Sciences. Following my initial postgraduate training in the West Midlands, I completed an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in General Practice and undertook my GP training in Windsor. I was awarded a scholarship for an MSc in Evidence Based Health Care at the University of Oxford.
I have experience of routine NHS general practice, out of hours, remote telemedicine, home visiting, prison medicine, medico-legal practice, extended hours hubs, and urgent treatment centres.
I provide sessional support to a local NHS Trust as an independent Medical Examiner, as well as to HM Courts and Tribunal Service as a Medically Qualified Member.
My secondary care experience during my training has covered a variety of clinical areas, including Trauma and Orthopaedics, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Urology, Palliative Medicine, Oncology, Elderly Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Acute Medicine.
I have obtained several further qualifications as a GP: Diploma of Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists (DRCOG); Diploma in Legal Medicine (DLM); Diploma in Occupational Medicine (DOccMed); Diploma in Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM); and RCGP Substance Misuse Certificate (Part 1).
I am currently a Clinical Lead at Thames Valley Cancer Alliance leading work on cancer inequalities. I also sit on the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Technology Appraisal Committee, evaluating new drugs for inclusion on the NHS.
Previously, I provided clinical leadership to the Community Paediatrics service for a local trust on service innovation. I was also an Associate Medical Director for a large urgent care provider, and a GP auditor for NHS111 during the Covid pandemic.
I am an alumnus of the National Medical Director's Clinical Fellowship scheme, where I co-authored the new return to practice scheme for GPs. I was also a Specialist Adviser for Care Quality Commission (CQC) for their acute hospital inspections.
I have obtained the PRINCE2 Practitioner project management certification and am a member of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (MFMLM) and the British Medical Association.
I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCME) from the University of Dundee and am a member of the Academy of Medical Educators (MAcadMedEd). I work for NHS England as a GP Training Programme Director for the Oxford Deanery, and I am also the regional RCGP Education Lead and previous was an RCGP CPD author.
I currently have an honorary academic position at Imperial College London, and have published over 30 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters with nearly £1million in research grants. My Google Scholar is available here.
I examine final year medical students for St George's University of London Medical School in addition to examining international medical graduates in the PLAB exam for the General Medical Council. I have previously taught pharmacists for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and I am an approved out of hours GP clinical supervisor for the Oxford Deanery.
Outside of medicine I am involved in local community organising for several years and have won several national awards. Alongside colleagues, I helped set up and subsequently lead the British Islamic Medical Association, the Federation of Ethnic Minority Health Organisations, and the London Muslim Health Network. Through these roles I have engaged at a high level with leaders in the NHS, local government, and public health on various matters relating to population health and workforce.
I am a Trustee of the Yusra Jinaan Foundation which was set up as a charity along with my wife in the memory of our late daughter Yusra, to bring ease to the lives of families of children with disabilities.
